With their new album “Der Tod, die Muse” (“Death, the Muse”), alto Cornelia Sonnleithner and pianist Clara Sophia Murnig invite listeners on a musical journey through transience, memory, and transformation.
Works by Gustav Mahler, Modest Mussorgski, and Johannes Brahms form the core of the album and, at the CD presentation, are complemented by compositions by Robert Schumann and Beat Furrer.
Together, they create an arc spanning from the Romantic era to the present day.
Voice and piano engage in dialogue as equal partners. The art song becomes an immediate space of expression between loss and consolation, longing and new beginnings.
The album will be released on November 13th 2026 by KEY:ARTRECORDS

The program takes its title from a work by pianist, composer, and improviser Verena Zeiner: a cycle commissioned by Clara S. Murnig, consisting of open, mobile forms and impromptu-like structures. Also occupying a prominent place in the program is G. Ligeti’s Musica ricercata, likewise a cycle of pieces characterized by an improvisatory quality and the gradual introduction of pitch classes. Grouped around these two pillars of the program are further works that pursue related harmonic approaches beyond the purely constructive and, in favor of a more intuitive kind of musical drawing, at times unfold an evocative, pictorial effect.
